3Z Incursion (Redux)

3Z Incursion was released on the Google Play store in the first quarter of 2017. You can read a little about that release here. It was a first foray into virtual reality gaming that stemmed from a research project. It was simple, but it was fun. It only ran on an android phone with Google cardboard, despite not using any of the APIs for cardboard (did I mention it was a research project originally?).

Fast forward to first quarter 2025. The original game has been off the Google Play store for several years. Virtual reality headsets (HMDs) have become affordable, fairly common in use, and much better than what one could do in 2016. And “3Z Incursion” is still a great name for a game. Given what VR has become and where it is moving towards, the question had to be asked, “What would 3Z Incursion have been if it was built today instead of in 2016?”

Design and development for a brand new 3Z Incursion started with that question. And no, it will not be 3Z Incursion Redux. Nearly ten years and having full ownership of the original version givens one the right to call it a clean slate, so no “redux”. Just the game that should have been built from the very start had it never been a research project.

3Z Incursion. Built in Unreal Engine 5.6. Designed to run on Meta Quest 2/3/3S.
